Rogers SMS Issues

Postby GrandWizard » Mon Dec 05, 2016 12:25 pm

Rogers is now throttling all messages that originate outside of its network. It looks like they are only accepting a few text messages per minute which effectively means nobody is going to get timely alerts through their service. We talked with their tech support for many weeks to no end. They will not reverse their policy of restricting SMS messsages that do not originate on their network.

DO NOT rely on Rogers of Fido for real-time alerts. It could be many hours, or never, before you will receive an alert.

Use a PUSH nofitication email service like Gmail or iCloud, for Android of iPhone respectively. These are just as fast as SMS alerts and offer greater flexibilty i.e. having different ring-tones of alerts.

This is due to the antispam mechanism that has been put in. EyezOn (and others) are using the Email to SMS interface for something that is it not permitted to be used for.

The correct way of doing it is to get a short code or long code and send SMS messages through an aggregator such as OpenMarket or Twilio. You may event consider taking a look at ZipWhip. You can reuse the EyezOn support phone number to originate the SMS messages from.

This will become an ever increasing problem across all the wireless carriers.

Update: The IOS app gives me notifications, so I was able to cancel the $5/mo service.

====
I had to pay for the $5/mo email-2-SMS feature and it started working for me. I also used their help link to whitelist addresses (eyezon, etc). It sucks as it used to work without paying...

Seems Rogers has discontinued some SMS gateway services.

Rogers will no longer support the following text messaging services:
  • Email-to-Text (SMTP-to-SMS) used for sending text messages via email (i.e.: xxxxxxxxxx@sms.rogers.com)
  • Paging-to-Text (SNPP-to-SMS or WCTP-to-SMS) used for sending pager messages to text via internet-enabled PC or software.

Yes this is true. You can still use XXXXXXXXXX@pcs.rogers.com but if you don't want the annoying "READ MESSAGE" pre-text-message you will have to pay $5 a month for the "Enhanced Text Messaging" service. No other carrier in the world charges for this service except Rogers.
